LMIC+ Free Membership

Countries Eligible for Free Membership to ISTAART

ISTAART offers free membership to all professionals working in Alzheimer's & dementia research and treatment when based in low- and middle-income countries, developing economies, economies in transition, or small island developing states. Discounts are applied at checkout during the membership sign-up process.

Countries are classified annually using a combination of the World Bank's income status report and the United Nation's economic status and prospects report.
 


Journal Waivers

Waivers for Publications in Alzheimer's and Dementia Journal Family

In addition to Research4Life waivers, a limited number of discretionary waivers are available for manuscripts where the corresponding author is an ISTAART member based in a country classified in the above LMIC+ country list. Corresponding authors should contact the publisher's (Wiley) editorial office before submission for further details. 

Waivers are limited and the offer of a waiver does not guarantee acceptance of the manuscript.

The Diversity & Disparities Professional Interest Area (PIA) hosts a Special Interest Group (SIG) that works on a range of topics pertinent to Alzheimer's research and treatment in LMIC countries. Career Development

Programs to Support Early- and Mid-Career Researchers and Clinicians

ISTAART Ascent is a career-development initiative designed to accelerate the trajectory of emerging leaders through peer-to-peer connections, skill development, and opportunity sharing. Applicants from LMICs are prioritized for this cohort-based program tailored to mid-career individuals. Early-career members are encouraged to consider the ISTAART Ambassador Program, which also highly encourages LMIC applicants. 

 


International Conference Access

Conference Discounts and Fellowships

The Alzheimer's Association offers year-round convening opportunities for the dementia science community including the Alzheimer's Association International Conference® (AAIC®) — the world's largest meeting dedicated to advancing dementia science — and a variety of in-person and virtual conferences and symposia. Members from LMIC+ country list receive highly discounted registration rates for in-person access. LMIC+ members are also prioritised for conference fellowships which can cover registration, flights, and accommodation costs.

Conference fellowship eligibility is also determined based on abstract scores and other demographic criteria, and a limited number are available per conference.
 


Funding Opportunities

Grant Programs Tailored to LMICs

The International Research Grant Program (IRGP) funds a wide range of the most promising projects, with specific programs to promote diversity in science. Members underrepresented in science, particularly those from LMICs, are highly encouraged to apply to these tailored programs. The IRGP also provides a Capacity Building in International Dementia Research grant to explicitly target capacity building for scientific investigation within institutions located in LMICs.
